Over $4.8 Million in Hazard-Related Funding for County Public Housing Developments

Funds to Evaluate and Reduce Residential Health Hazards

September 19, 2023 – The Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded more than $4.8 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), through the Capital Fund Housing-Related Hazards and Lead-Based Paint Capital Fund Notice of Funding Opportunity awards, which provides funding to public housing agencies to evaluate and reduce residential health hazards in public housing, including lead-based paint, carbon monoxide, mold, radon, fire safety, and asbestos. The grants will go toward three separate LACDA public housing developments: Carmelitos in Long Beach, Nueva Maravilla in East Los Angeles, and South County (Scattered Sites) in Los Angeles.

The grant will allow the LACDA to address exigent health and safety issues by finalizing existing asbestos abatement and flooring replacement projects at the Carmelitos and Nueva Maravilla housing sites. At the South Scattered Sites, health and safety renovations are scheduled to address mold prevention, flooring replacement, and the installation of vents in the bathrooms. All three developments are owned and managed by the LACDA and are multifamily and senior family sites.

The LACDA is currently undergoing several renovations at its public housing sites. More recently, the LACDA completed a lengthy solar renovation at the Orchard Arms senior housing site which consisted of installing solar panels over the tenant parking lots that resulted in reduced energy bills for senior tenants. Throughout the years, the LACDA has been fortunate to establish partnerships with Southern California Edison Company, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and Southern California Gas Company to provide tenants with cost-savings energy renovations.

“We are excited and thankful to receive this grant from HUD,” said Emilio Salas, LACDA Executive Director. “It is paramount to the LACDA that we provide residents with a safe and healthy living space. This grant will allow us to expand upon our renovations and continue to work diligently in Los Angeles County building healthy communities.”
